BUSINESS CHALLENGE

For a high-growth company like Proforce that has hundreds of pest control technicians also known as service professionals across the Southeast, efficient route planning is the heartbeat of the business.

Proforce uses detailed demographics data and powerful door knocking tools to direct its door to door sales force to neighborhoods with neighborhoods where residents have high disposable income and an existing expectation of professional home maintenance. “This ensures the route density stays high, which is the key to profitability in pest control”, explains Mark Shorr, Proforce’s CEO.

Proforce’s rapid expansion across its 11 branches highlighted the challenges of managing a widely distributed workforce. This geographical spread, coupled with heavy commuter traffic and the complexity of matching technician licenses to specific jobs, such as ensuring a termite specialist isn’t dispatched to a mosquito-only call, exposed the limitations of their traditional routing.

Because Proforce's subscriptions include warranty services in addition to planned services, routes planned weeks in advance often require revisions to efficiently satisfy urgent customer requests. Sorting stops one month in advance for proactive scheduling and then sorting again one day ahead to accommodate new customers and warranty services.

SOLUTION

It became clear that standard industry tools would not prioritize a fully optimized routing experience. To better serve Proforce's customers, Mark Shorr, Proforce's CEO, sought the expertise of professional routing specialists to create fuel-efficient, sensible routes that adapt to traffic patterns and allow their service professionals to see more customers per day while spending more time with each one. This reduces windshield time, lowers fuel spend, increases the number of customers served, and provides more face time with each customer. A true quadruple win! Mark and Afian Anwar, CEO of Afi Labs, spent a great deal of time revising Proforce's routing process and system capabilities. Afian determined that integrating the Google Maps Route Optimization API (GMPRO) into FieldRoutes, Proforce’s field service management software, would provide the most efficient solution. Route planning is managed through a separate app synced with FieldRoutes. This way, Proforce gets to keep their existing workflows while benefiting from Google’s advanced routing algorithms and real-time traffic data, without requiring FieldRoutes to develop a new route optimization feature.

To keep FieldRoutes and the Proforce Route Planner in sync, Afi Labs built a custom data pipeline that routes customer visit data through BigQuery directly into the Route Planner's Google Cloud environment, powering its proprietary integration and supercharging it with Google’s real-time optimization capabilities.

Within the Route Planner interface, dispatchers have the flexibility to either manually adjust customer visit sequences or use GMPRO for fully automated route optimization.

Through a visual map interface, dispatchers can instantly see where customers are located and the exact order they should be visited, bringing new clarity and predictability to Proforce’s field operations.

INVESTING IN GROWTH

As the company scales, Mark explains that his biggest opportunity is leveraging advanced technology to improve productivity while simultaneously enhancing the level of customer service delivered.

By building the Proforce Route Planner on Google Cloud and placing GMPRO at the core of Proforce’s daily operations, Proforce was able to reduce the time their operations team spent planning routes by 45% while also reducing the time service professionals spend sitting in traffic. In the next phase of their route optimization journey, Proforce will use GMPRO to generate optimal weekly and monthly schedules to ensure that every customer is visited at the agreed-upon frequency by the most qualified teams.
